Woman Blames Yaz for Near-Death Experience

Woman Blames Yaz for Near-Death Experience

The mother of a 16-year-old Pennsylvania girl who nearly died is publicly blaming Bayer and the birth control drug Yaz for her child's illness. Reports say the mother has filed a personal injury lawsuit against Bayer on behalf of her daughter, alleging that Yaz was responsible for her daughter's severe and lasting injuries.

According to the suit, the 16-year-old was in perfect health when she began taking Yaz, but suffered pulmonary emboli, which obstructed her pulmonary artery and caused her to suffer cardiac arrest. The girl was unresponsive for nearly three minutes before doctors at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh were able to revive her.

At the inception of this suit, more than 100 lawsuits had been filed by women across the United States who claimed they suffered strokes, pulmonary emboli, deep vein thrombosis, blood clots, gallbladder disease, and other serious injuries after taking Yaz. Since then, all lawsuits pending in federal court were consolidated for centralized and coordinated pre-trial proceedings in the US District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, reports say.

Yaz - and its related drug Yasmin -- are made with a type of progestin called drospirenone, a synthetic material. Drospirenone can elevate the body's potassium levels, which can lead to serious heart and health problems, reports say. Yaz is the top-selling oral contraceptive in the U.S., generating about $1.8 billion for Bayer last year alone.

  1. After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
