Chemical Plant Explosion in Crosby, TX Results in Immediate and Long-Term Injuries
An Explosion at a Crosby, Texas Chemical Plant Owned by KMCO Causes Serious
Injury to Workers
A trio of chemical plant fires and explosions in the Houston area underscore
the dangers of such facilities. A third chemical plant fire in just over
two weeks in the Houston area has resulted in one death and two critical
injuries at a Crosby chemical processing and storage facility. The fire
the KMCO facility in Harris County resulted from an explosion which was
caused by the ignition of isobutylene gas. Due to the frequency of chemical
plant explosions, and associated injuries and deaths, The Doan Law Firm
has established a chemical plant injury attorney hot-line at (832) 835-0000.
The chemical plant injury attorney hot-line is staffed around the clock,
365 days a year, including major holidays.
The Crosby Chemical Plant Explosion
The explosion at the Crosby chemical plant occurred late in the morning
on April 2, 2019. Emergency personnel immediately were dispatched to the
scene to provide assistance to injured employees and to begin the process
of containing the blaze caused by the explosion.
In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, a plume of thick, black smoke
immediately arose above the KMCO chemical plant and spread outwards. As
a result, emergency and health officials issued a shelter in place order
for residents of Crosby and for students in schools in Crosby as well
as in the Sheldon Independent School District.
A major issue associated with chemical plant explosions is that harmful
toxins can be emitted into the atmosphere in smoke plumes, toxins that
have the potential of causing health problems in people exposed to the
pollutants. In many instances, health issues that arise from exposure
to smoke from chemical plant explosions are not immediately manifested.
Indeed, months or even years can pass before evidence of a health issue
or disease arises. On the other hand, there can be people who exhibit
health issues not long after exposure to emissions from a chemical plant
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board has launched an investigation into the underlying
cause of the Crosby chemical plant fire. Investigators from the Board
will work with other officials from local and state agencies in Texas.
The Deer Park Chemical Plant Explosion
Approximately two weeks before the Crosby chemical plant explosion, another
explosion and mammoth fire occurred at a Deer Park chemical plant, also
located in Harris County near Houston. While the Crosby chemical plant
fire was brought under control within a day, the same cannot be said of
the Deer Park chemical plant explosion. The Deer Park fire grew over the
course of a couple of days, engulfing numerous chemical storage tanks
at the facility. More than three days passed before the fire was brought
At least 20 people were injured as a direct result of the Deer Park chemical
plant explosion, being injured on the grounds of the facility itself.
There is no specific data as of yet as to whether individuals have been
harmed in any way as a result of the massive plumes of smoke, laden with
hazardous gases, that not only spread over Dear Park and greater Houston
but as far away as the outskirts of Austin.
Protecting Legal Rights After a Houston Chemical Plant Explosion
The shocking reality is that the aftermath of a chemical plant explosion,
let alone three such incidents in short succession, can be devastating
to more people than anyone might initially imagine. Of course, this includes
people who are injured at a facility itself as the result of a Houston
chemical plant fire following an explosion. There are people who will
have suffered injuries immediately after an explosion, some of which prove
permanently debilitating. There may be others who have suffered injuries
that only become evident down the road.
People who face injuries as the result of a Houston chemical plant explosion
simply cannot rest on their laurels. They must be proactive and find out
what their rights are following this type of incident.
