Prozac is one of the most recognized pharmaceuticals in recent medical history. Sold under a variety of trade names, the official name of the compound was Fluoxetine. At one point it was the most profitable pharmaceutical product on the planet.

What is Prozac?

Prozac is the trade name of the pharmaceutical compound fluoxetine, first developed and sold by Eli Lilly and Company on the American market in December 1987. Its official molecular description is (RS)-N-methyl-3-phenyl-3-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]propan-1-amine. Eli Lilly’s patent on fluoxetine in the United States expired in August 2001 and now the compound is manufactured by more than 35 companies.

Prozac was classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an antidepressant belonging to the serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of psychiatric medicines. In the United States, Prozac was used to treat major depressive disorder, including depression in children, bulimia, panic disorder and other similar anxiety-oriented disorders.

Prozac’s primary use was in treating depression in children and adults. Millions of prescriptions of Prozac were filled in the first 10 years that the drug was on the market. In later years, the use of Prozac expanded to include treatments for suicidal thoughts, difficulty sleeping, aggressive behavior, and frenzied abnormal excitement.

SSRI pharmaceutical compounds, including Prozac, are designed to amplify the levels of serotonin on the extracellular level in the brain. By blocking its reabsorption into the presynaptic cells, more extracellular serotonin is available to bind to nearby postsynaptic receptors. Prevailing theory states that increased blockage of the postsynaptic receptors promotes mood stability and elevation.

Prozac, during its time under patent protection, was always administered orally. It was available in capsules of 10mg, 20mg and 40mg. It was also sold in tablets of 10mg and 20mg. Prozac was also sold in solution at a concentration of 20mg per 5ml. The active ingredient in all Prozac is fluoxetine hydrochloride.

Inactive ingredients included in Prozac sold in the United States include: starch, gelatin, silicone, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Yellow No. 10, FD&C Blue No. 2, hypromellose, hypromellose acetate succinate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sucrose, sugar spheres, talc, titanium oxide and triethyl citrate.

After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
