Toxic Gas Kills British Worker

Posted By Injury Attorney || 13-Aug-2010

After a cloud of toxic gas escaped from a factory, a worker who came in contact with the gas died, reports say.

The worker, Paul Doyley, from Immingham, near London, was fatally injured when titanium tetrachloride fumes escaped from the Cristal Global site earlier this year.

Although he received treatment for chemical burns and inhalation of toxic fumes in a specialist burns unit at Pinderfields General Hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Doyley, who was 48 and had been with the company for 20 years, died from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

In addition, two other men suffered chemical burns in the leak. One man is still receiving treatment and the other was taken to hospital but released a few hours after the accident.

At least 10 fire crews were at the scene. Firefighters used a blanket of foam to contain the spillage, but the plant was shut down for some time as officials from the Health and Safety Executive investigated.

Plant workers take risks every day. Some of the risks they know; others they don't. But adding to those risks by individual negligence or under-training employees increases the on-the-job danger tremendously. After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
