South Carolina Worker Dies in Forklift Accident

Posted By Personal Injury Lawyer || 23-Jul-2010

A Belmont, SC worker died Friday after the forklift he was driving fell on top of him as he unloaded pallets from an 18-wheeler. The incident occurred at the Parkdale Mills plant at 103 E. Woodlawn Ave., Belmont, SC.

While driving a tow motor on a ramp that was lined with railing, one of the wheels drove off of the ramp. The man unbuckled his seat belt and attempted to get free of the machinery but it fell off the ramp and pinned him, reports say.

Firefighters used a hydraulic lift to free the man from the wreckage. The man was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and later died. He was 50 years old,

The leading cause of the work-related fatalities in South Carolina was from falls with nine fatalities, followed by eight fatalities due to explosions. Five workers were crushed by objects, and five were struck by objects. Four workers died in other fatal events.

After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
