Infant Hospital Death Ruled Homicide

Posted By Houston Personal Injury Attorney || 22-Oct-2010

A Las Vegas hospital is facing criminal charges over the death of an infant whose umbilical catheter was severed, reports say.

The child, who died in Sunrise Children's Hospital in Las Vegas, was ruled a homicide by the coroner's office, reports say.

The Clark County Coroner's office mean the death of 2-month-old Miowne Obote, although not necessarily murder, was as a direct result of the negligence of the hospital, reports say. The infant reportedly suffered severe bleeding when the catheter was severed, causing a fatal lack of oxygen to the brain, ultimately causing the infant's death.

Although the hospital describes the catheter as "interrupted," not severed, the licenses of hospital neonatal intensive care unit nurses Jessica May Rice and Sharon Ochoa-Reyes were reportedly suspended after a police investigation into other incidents of disrupted catheters.

Parents of hospitalized children have to worry about without adding to the risk of injury to their loved ones via lack of training. Adding to that worry by individual negligence or under-training reduces the confidence patients have in their medical staff. After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
