Daycare Operator in Flees Country

Posted By Houston Personal Injury Attorney || 3-Mar-2011

Reports say the woman who ran a west Houston day care that caught fire late last month and killed four children fled to Nigeria before she was charged.

The daycare operator, Jessica Tata, 22, reportedly flew to her home in Nigeria on Saturday late last month before she was ever charged with the deaths of the four children in her care.

An arrest warrant was issued on the last day of February for one count of reckless bodily injury to a child. The charge carries a sentence of two to 10 years in prison if she is convicted.

The daycare, Jackie's Child Care, was located at Crestpark at Waypark. It became the subject of intense interest after a fire broke out one afternoon last month. Tata was watching the children at the time of the fire because she was grocery shopping, reports say.

Two children made it outside the home and five more became trapped inside, with three dying in the fire and a fourth dying after hospitalization. All of victims ranged in age from 16 months to 3 years old. Two of the three surviving children are at Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston in critical condition. The third surviving child has been released from the hospital.

After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
