Steel Coil Crushes Worker To Death

While moving a 660-pound, 5-foot coil of steel, a worker was killed when the coil fell on him and crushed him to death. The man, whose name wasn't immediately available, was about to wrap a chain through the coil on a forklift when the coil slipped off the lift and crushed him.

The worker had driven the forklift to the front of the coil in the holding area and began to prepare the coil for transportation to the pipe mill. Using the forks of the forklift, he set the coil of steel on its flat edge - only a nine-inch surface.

Reports say that as the coil of steel began to toppled onto him, the worker tried to escape, but it landed on his left side, crushing the leg and causing internal injuries.

Other workers rushed to his rescue and found him unconscious. The worker regained consciousness and was at first coherent as he waited for emergency services to arrive. As he was taken by ambulance to the closest hospital in a neighboring state, he lapsed again into unconsciousness, reports say. He died that same day from internal injuries.
