South Carolina Worker Dies in Forklift Accident

A Belmont, SC worker died Friday after the forklift he was driving fell on top of him as he unloaded pallets from an 18-wheeler. The incident occurred at the Parkdale Mills plant at 103 E. Woodlawn Ave., Belmont, SC.

While driving a tow motor on a ramp that was lined with railing, one of the wheels drove off of the ramp. The man unbuckled his seat belt and attempted to get free of the machinery but it fell off the ramp and pinned him, reports say.

Firefighters used a hydraulic lift to free the man from the wreckage. The man was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and later died. He was 50 years old,

The leading cause of the work-related fatalities in South Carolina was from falls with nine fatalities, followed by eight fatalities due to explosions. Five workers were crushed by objects, and five were struck by objects. Four workers died in other fatal events.
