Women Claim Transvaginal Mesh Had Painful Side Affects

A handful of women have become co-plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the makers of transvaginal mesh, reports say.

The complaints were raised after doctors of each of the women used the devices during surgery to treat pelvic organ prolapsed, a condition where the pelvic muscles and tissues of older women become weak, which then causes internal organs to drop. Each of the women was urged by their doctors to repair the symptoms with transvaginal mesh.

All women in the suit underwent surgery, but conditions of each allegedly worsened. In some cases, the mesh had eroded rectum and lower abdomen tissues; in others, they developed infections, allegedly making the patients worse than before the surgery.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a warning for transvaginal mesh complications in 2008, reports say; and last month, the agency issued a second warning that suggested complications with transvaginal mesh products, with some 2,800 complaints about the devices and the surgery.
