Fire Kills Three at Houston Daycare

A fire broke out in a home daycare in the 2800 block of Crestpark late last week, killing three children.

Reports say the in-home daycare facility, named Jackie's Child Care, caught fire around 1:20 p.m. when the operator of the daycare was shopping. The children were left alone, reports say.

The daycare operator, Jessica Tata, 22, was evidently grocery shopping. Reports say that neighbors saw Tata pull up to the home with grocery bags as the fire started. The fire started on top of the electric stove in the kitchen. It started with a pot of oil which had been left on the burner.

When firefighters arrived they found two children who had the ability to get themselves outside onto the sidewalk and five other children trapped inside the burning house. Three of the children were killed in the fire. The three, Elizabeth Kojah, 20-months old, of Cypress, and Kendyll Stradford, also 20-months old, and Shomari Dickerson, 3, died. Three of the four others were transported to Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston in critical condition, which specializes in burn victims.
