Charges were filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal traffic accident in the 600 block of the East Loop South, also known as East Interstate Highway 610 South, which occurred on Saturday March 12.
The accident involved a tan Chrysler Sebring and a brown Chevrolet Astro van, which were traveling north on the 610 East Loop on the Ship Channel Bridge. According to witnesses, the driver of the Sebring made an unsafe lane change and struck the Astro van. The driver of the Astro van took evasive action and struck the outside concrete wall of the bridge.
The two victims in the van were ejected over the edge of the bridge and landed on the ground below. Four other persons in the van were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in fair condition. The driver and a passenger of the Sebring fled on foot.
The police investigation led to the identification of Moises DeJesus Alvarenga, 27, who was charged with two counts of accident involving injury. Two victims, a 35-year-old woman, Luz Campos, of Houston, and a 12-year-old boy, David Campos, of Houston, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Alvarenga has reportedly confessed to his role in the accident. The passenger is not charged in this incident.
