Diver Drowns in Training Accident

An experienced British diver drowned last week during deep water training at a scuba diving center that has already been the scene of numerous fatalities.

The diver, whose name has not been released, reportedly had trouble in an exercise meant to improve deep diving skills at the British National Diving Center in Leicestershire. Four other divers also risked decompression sickness by bringing the diver to the surface at a speed that could have been fatal to them, reports say. Even with their efforts, the fallen diver was transported and pronounced dead at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The four divers who brought the victim to the surface did actually sustain injuries from decompression sickness, also known as the bends, and were airlifted to hospital by an RAF Sea King helicopter. As the police began their investigation, officials reported that the four divers were recovering.

Reports say the group came from a Derbyshire diving school, which sits on a 13-acre rock quarry site that became a training ground for commercial divers before they go out to the North Sea. The facility offers depths up to about 220 feet. And at least one diver has drowned each year since the center opened in 1978.

Deep sea diving is a dangerous hobby - or profession. With so many variables that make it risky each and every time an individual goes beneath the surface, there is a possibility of mistakes made by others that can be fatal.

  1. After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
