Fishing Victim's Widow Sues US Army For Husband's Drowning

Amanda DeLoach Slappey, the widow of The widow a Leesburg, Ga., man, has filed suit against the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, seeking $40 million in damages for the death of her husband who drowned in 2009 while duck hunting on Lake Seminole, reports say.

John Mark Slappey was swept over the Jim Woodruff Dam while hunting on Lake Seminole in (???). Slappey's body was not recovered until January 2010.

The lawsuit reportedly alleges that Slappey's death was directly related to negligence by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, who, the lawsuit claims, opened a spillway which created powerful currents that swept her husband over the dam.

Reports say the suit contends that although a sign stating the danger, the suit contends it was too small to read. Furthermore, it did not adhere to the Corps's own signage regulation. In addition, reports say a cable line restraining device was also present, but that it was in a state of disrepair. And the lawsuit also alleges that a Corps employee threw Slappey a life preserver, but it, too, was in disrepair and broke when he grabbed it.

  1. After an accident, the responsible party's insurance company may try to reduce the claim amount. Commonly, insurance adjusters are trained to get information from the injured to assist in reducing the claim. Though some insurers are less guilty of this practice than others, it is important to realize that insurance companies are profit-oriented corporations and reducing claims results in increased profits for shareholders. This can create a situation for the injured in which they are offered a settlement that does not truly reflect the damages suffered. If you accept this settlement, you lose the ability to get more money should your injuries require further medical treatments. It is critical that victims get legal assistance in any personal injury case, and The Doan Law Firm is prepared to fight relentlessly for your rights.
