Exploding Crock-Pots Seriously Injure 100 Consumers

Even though many people altered their Thanksgiving plans as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the November holiday remains something a celebration of food in homes across the country. People from all walks of life spend a considerable amount of time in their kitchens preparing some of their favorite dishes. Historically, holiday chefs use an array of different types of culinary devices, including the Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker. Just prior to the 2020 Thanksgiving holiday, Sunbeam Products, the manufacturer of the Crock-Port Express Pressure Cooker, recalled approximately 1 million of these popular devices.

The manufacturer’s recall includes devices, formally known as Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers, manufactured by the company between July 2017 and October 2018. The recalled units have the model number SCCPPC600-V1 clearly imprinted on the bottom. The recalled Crock-Pot Pressure Cookers have date codes K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN. Other Sunbeam Crock-Pot products are not subject to the recall.

The Crock-Pot Pressure Cookers subject to the recall were sold by a trio of retailers:

  • Walmart
  • Target
  • Amazon

Sales at Walmart and Target were made both in their brick and mortar world stores and online. They were sold by these merchants for between $70 and $100.

The Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cookers come complete with three settings. These allow a consumer the ability to slow cook, sauté, and pressure cook. According to the manufacturer, Sunbeam, only the pressure cook setting presents a serious danger to consumers. With that said, even though operating the device on the slow cook or sauté setting appears to present no risk, the firm recommendation is for consumers to return the product and not use it at any setting.

Over 100 consumers have reported being injured as a result of Crock-Pot explosions. These consumers have suffered injuries that have included first- and third-degree burns. As of this time, there has been no report of anyone being killed as a result of the defective Crock-Pots. With that said, some individuals have sustained permanent injuries as a result of the Crock-Pot explosions.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a statement regarding the exploding Crock-Pots. The agency reported that recalled Crock-Pots were able to pressurize without the lids being properly locked. As a result, the Crock-Pots exploded in some cases, with the lids blowing off the tops of the devices. When that occurred, the dangerously hot contents of the Crock-Pots were blown or ejected from the devices, causing users serious injuries in many cases.

Reports about people sustained injuries as a result of the exploding Crock-Pots have been received by both the manufacturer and the Consumer Product Safety Commission for over a year. Investigation into the cause of the Crock-Pot explosions have identified a manufacturer’s defect in the product. In other words, there exists a dangerous defect in the design or manufacture of the Crock-Pot Express Pressure Cooker than causes it to malfunction, resulting in serious injuries to consumers in the vicinity of a device when it explodes.
