An Austin home exploded on Sunday, April 13, injuring at least six people and damaging 24 homes near the source of the blast. Early reports claim that the blast was heard as far away as Georgetown, and pictures of the incident scene show a plume of smoke extending into the sky above the wrecked home. Federal agencies are investigating the cause of the blast, which also downed power lines in the area and left nearby residents without power for some time.
As they arrived at the scene of the incident, first responders noted that the structure had been “completely leveled by the explosion.” There was also a vehicle engulfed by flames at the scene of the initial explosion. Firefighters successfully rescued two victims from the area. One person was rescued from the collapsed home and the second victim was rescued from an neighboring residence. Six adults, including a pair of firefighters, were reportedly injured in the explosion. Two of the explosion’s victims sustained critical injuries, with a third victim in serious but stable condition. The other three victims suffered only minor injuries. First responders report that they believe that all residents of the affected homes have been accounted for.
Determining the Explosion’s Cause
As of today, local authorities do not have a definitive answer for the explosion’s cause. The Travis County Fire Marshal is leading an investigation into the incident and a spokesperson for the Austin Fire Department confirmed that they do not expect a criminal investigation to be launched.
