Apparent Link Between Prescription Acne Drug and Ulcerative Colitis

Reports say a recent article in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found a link between the use of Isotretinoin – which is the generic term for Accutane — and Ulcerative Colitis, a disease that causes ulcers in the colon and/or large intestines.

Accutane, an acne drug, is also alleged to cause Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The forms of IBD include Crohn’s Disease, Collageneous Colitis, Lymphocytic Colitis, Ischaemic Colitis, Diversion Colitis, Indeterminate Colitis and Behcet’s Syndrome.

Medical patients enough problems without adding to the risk of drug side effects. Of course, some of the risks are known.
