Nearly one-fifth of patients receiving Implanted Defibrillators are having the implants done outside guidelines for their use, reports say. Not only are the devices unnecessary, in some cases patients have a higher risk of death than individuals who fit the criteria for receiving an implanted defibrillator, reports say.

The devices provide an electrical shock to an erratically beating heart, but researchers found that many patients were either recent heart attack victims or newly-diagnosed heart failure patients, reports say. The risk of any post-procedure complications in those patients was reportedly higher.
