Texas Face Transplant Recipient First in Country

Twenty-five-year-old Dallas Wiens, of Fort Worth, was a construction worker when he was badly disfigured in a power line accident two years ago. He recently became the first person in the United States’ to get a full face transplant.

Reports say that surgical staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston — led by the plastic surgeon Bohdan Pomahac — performed a 15-hour operation last week that gives Wiens a shot at a normal life after having his face burned beyond recognition.

Although the first in the U.S., Weins is not the first-ever face transplant patient. The first full face transplant was performed by Spanish doctors for a farmer who was unable to breathe or eat after accidentally shooting himself in the face with a gun.
